Many people have complained regarding the length of time it has taken to receive their firearm license, the delay is not unique to Tyngsborough and is being experienced across the state. I wanted to take a moment to explain what we have done on the local level so everyone has a better understanding of the process.
During the year we have implemented a new system for processing firearm licenses, several employees within our department now have specific responsibilities in regard to the processing of licenses. This responsibility formerly was given to just one officer which created an excessive workload and backlog. We are currently processing our licenses in a very efficient manner and are currently caught up with all of our applications. We are aware that many people have experienced significant delays receiving their firearm licenses, the state currently has a backlog of 3-6 months; on the local level we process the applications, conduct background investigations, take photo’s, fingerprints and then once we approve the license it is sent off to the state for issuance of a firearm license identification card. We have no control over how long it takes for the state to process and issue the license. During 2013 we have processed nearly 400 firearm license applications.
You can now retrieve the status of the firearms license application you’ve submitted to your local police department through the DCJIS by calling (617) 660-4722 during the normal business hours of Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The following information is required:
Date of birth
Active LTC, FID card, or machine gun license number
Driver’s license number (for identity verification)
Thank you for your patience and I assure you that all applications are being processed thoroughly and as expediently as we can.
